On Bare Parts
The first step is to remove the thatch, weeds, stones, sticks from the lawn and provide the grass
seed space to shoot up. Make the soil loose in uncovered parts upto a depth of 1″ with a
cultivator. On these spots apply a grass fertilizer or some compost. If these parts are a lot
compacted, loosen the soil upto 6″. It is required to add peat moss to these parts after sprinkling
seed. Now that the soil is ready, sprinkle the grass seed on these bare areas by hand or
hydraulic methods. Different seeds are available for shady areas and those exposed to sunlight.
used. After sprinkling make the area slightly moist with water.
On Entire Lawn
While seeding the entire lawn mow the lawn short. This provides the sprinkled seeds space to
reach the soil. Now if the soil is extremely hard the possibility of germination is less. So loosen
the soil. Apply a good organic material on the soil. Select a new variety of seeds, which resists
insects and can stand drought. Sprinkle seeds by hand, a mechanical seeder or a broadcast
seeder. The sprinkling must be even. Avoid seeding on a windy day or it will blow to one side of
the field. The fertilizer to be added must be low in nitrogen, which avoids burning and more in
phosphorus, which enhances root development. Over the sprinkled seeds put a thin layer of
compost. Keep the seed moist. Hydro seeding means that a professional company sprinkles the
grass seed and mulch mix on the lawn and only watering has to be done. This is an easier but
costlier method.
Tips
The areas in which seeds are sprinkled are to be kept moist at all times till the seed germinates.
Intimidate birds from these areas by using a red flash tape. Maintain a thin film of organic matter
(eg. Manure) over the area. Cover the bare area with plastic sheets placing some stones at the
edges till little shoots grow upto 1″. Soon the fresh grass will mix with the old grass. Due to
raking some existing grass gets removed but it is substituted by new grass.
